Blackbox rate and flash

The Blackbox tab is the log stored on the craft. It picks the device, the rate, and, on Betaflight, which fields go into the file. It is not the CSV written by the Logging tab, and it is not the viewer that draws the graphs.

Betaflight rates are 1/1, 1/2, 1/4, 1/8 and 1/16 of the PID loop. The tab calls 1/2 a good start for filter tuning, and on an 8 kHz loop that is 4 kHz. The number next to the rate is that fraction of the loop this board reports. Not every board is 8 kHz.

A faster rate shows more detail and fills the flash sooner. The device, the rate and the field switches are refused while the craft is armed. Download and erase wait until you disarm.

Free. Hardware connections need Chrome or Edge on a computer; phones use the FlySpark app.

In short

The Blackbox tab chooses the logging device and the fraction of the PID loop to record. On an 8 kHz loop, 1/2 is 4 kHz, the suggested start for filter tuning. The rate, the device and erase are refused while armed.

Key facts

  • Betaflight devices are None, onboard flash, SD card and serial (OpenLager).
  • Betaflight rates are 1/1, 1/2, 1/4, 1/8 and 1/16 of the PID loop. The demo starts at 1/2.
  • On an 8 kHz loop, 1/2 is 4 kHz. That is the suggested start for filter tuning.
  • INAV rates run from 1/1 to 1/32. INAV devices are serial, onboard flash and SD card.
  • Higher rates show more detail and fill the flash faster. Changes are refused while armed.
  • Flash download and erase need the board disarmed. Erase can take up to two minutes.
  • SD card logs are not downloaded over the link. A card reader reads them.
  • Chrome or Edge uses USB or Bluetooth. iPhone has no USB host.

Features

  • 01

    Where the log goes

Betaflight offers None, onboard flash, an SD card, or a serial logger such as OpenLager. None records nothing.

  • 02

    Five Betaflight rates

1/1 through 1/16 of the PID loop. The demo opens on onboard flash at 1/2. INAV goes on to 1/32.

  • 03

    Locked while armed

Changes are refused while armed. Disarm before you change the device, the rate, or which fields are stored.

  • 04

    Flash used

The ring shows percent used. Above 90 percent it says the chip is almost full. Empty flash cannot be downloaded or erased.

  • 05

    Download, then erase

Both need the board disarmed. Erase asks first, because everything on the flash is deleted. A large chip can take two minutes.

  • 06

    Fields you can leave out

Betaflight can drop PID, sticks, battery, gyro and the rest. On records that group. A new board logs everything.

The rate is a fraction of the loop

Betaflight stores the rate as a power of two. 1/1 logs every PID loop. 1/2 logs every second loop. 1/4, 1/8 and 1/16 follow. The label adds the resulting speed when the board has reported a loop time, so an 8 kHz loop shows 1/2 as 4 kHz and 1/4 as 2 kHz. A 4 kHz loop shows 1/2 as 2 kHz. Read the number on your board.

The footer says higher rates show more detail for tuning but fill the flash faster, and that 1/2 on an 8 kHz loop is a good start for filter tuning. Drop toward 1/8 or 1/16 when the chip fills before the flight ends. Go toward 1/1 only when you need the detail and the flash has room.

INAV uses a numerator and a denominator. The list is 1/1, 1/2, 1/4, 1/8, 1/16 and 1/32. A saved rate that is not one of those still shows as that fraction. The same rule applies: a larger fraction fills the storage sooner, and the choice is refused while armed.

The Logging tab is a different recorder. That one writes a CSV on the phone or computer, limited by Bluetooth or USB. Blackbox is the high-rate file on the craft. Use this rate for a flight you will open in the log viewer.

Flash, SD card, or a serial logger

Onboard flash shows a ring of how full it is, the bytes used, and the bytes free. At zero it says empty, ready to record. Above 90 percent it warns that the chip is almost full and asks you to download and erase soon. While the chip is erasing, the ring says so, and a large chip can take up to two minutes.

Download and Erase are off while armed, while a transfer is already running, while the chip is erasing, and while the flash is empty. Disarm to download or erase logs. Erase asks you to confirm, because everything on the onboard flash is deleted. Download first if you still need the flight.

An SD card is not downloaded over the flight controller link. On a computer or Android you can open the card as a USB drive, or use a card reader. iPhone has no USB host, so the card is read with a card reader. A serial logger such as OpenLager is the same idea: the file is on that logger's card, not in a download button.

Betaflight can also pick None. Armed with None does not show Recording. Armed with flash, an SD card, or a serial logger does. INAV has no None. Its devices are serial, onboard flash and SD card, and it shows Recording whenever the craft is armed.

Which fields go in the file

On Betaflight, when the firmware sends a field mask, a second card lists the groups. On records that group. Off leaves it out so the flash lasts longer. A new board logs everything. The groups are PID, RC commands, setpoint, battery, magnetometer, altitude, RSSI, gyro, accelerometer, debug, motor, GPS, RPM and unfiltered gyro.

A set bit in the mask is the group left out. Turning a switch off sets that bit. Turning it on clears the bit. The switches lock while armed, with the rate and the device.

A firmware built without blackbox logging shows that one sentence and no device, no rate and no fields. There is nothing to download until a build that includes blackbox is on the board.

Saved files on this device open in the log viewer. The tab accepts .BBL, .BFL and .TXT from Betaflight or INAV, lists up to 20 files, and deletes one with a swipe. The graphs are the viewer. This page is the rate and the storage.

Where you can set it

Chrome or Edge connects over USB or Bluetooth. Android adds Wi-Fi. iPhone uses Bluetooth or Wi-Fi and has no USB host. Flash download uses the link you already have. The SD card still needs a card reader on iPhone.

The demo opens on onboard flash at 1/2, with every field included, and it can download a short simulated flight into the viewer. A real board replaces that with the chip and the flights on the craft. Disarm before you change the rate.

Set the blackbox

  1. Disarm

The device, the rate and erase are refused while armed. Disarm first.

  2. Pick the device

Onboard flash, an SD card, a serial logger, or None. None records nothing on Betaflight.

  3. Pick the rate

Start at 1/2. On an 8 kHz loop that is 4 kHz. A faster rate fills the flash sooner.

  4. Download, then erase

After the flight, disarm, download the flash, then erase. An SD card is read from the card itself.

Troubleshooting

Common problems and fixes

  • Problem

    The rate will not change

    Fix

The craft is armed. Disarm. Changes to the device, the rate and the fields are refused while armed.

  • Problem

    The flash is almost full

    Fix

Used above 90 percent. Download, then erase. A slower rate, or leaving fields out, makes the next flight fit.

  • Problem

    Download and Erase are off

    Fix

Disarm, wait until an erase finishes, and check the flash is not already empty. Empty flash has nothing to download.

  • Problem

The SD card has no download button

    Fix

SD logs are not read over the flight controller link. Use a card reader. A computer can also open the card as a USB drive.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

What does the Betaflight Blackbox tab set?

Where the log is stored and how much of the PID loop is recorded. The graphs are the log viewer.

Which logging rates can I pick?

Betaflight offers 1/1, 1/2, 1/4, 1/8 and 1/16 of the PID loop. INAV adds 1/32. The demo starts at 1/2.

What is a good blackbox rate?

The tab calls 1/2 a good start for filter tuning. On an 8 kHz loop that is 4 kHz. Read the speed next to the rate on your board.

Why does a faster rate fill the flash?

It stores more of the loop. More detail, less flight time on the same chip. Leave fields out, or slow the rate, when the chip fills early.

Can I change the rate while armed?

No. The device, the rate, the fields, download and erase are refused while armed.

Where do SD card logs go?

They stay on the card. They are not downloaded over the flight controller link. Use a card reader, or open the card as a USB drive on a computer.

How long does erase take?

A large chip can take up to two minutes. Erase deletes everything on the onboard flash, so download first if you need the flight.

What if the tab says blackbox is missing?

This firmware was built without blackbox logging. There is no device and no rate until a build that includes it is flashed.

Is this the CSV logger?

No. The Logging tab writes a CSV on this device over the live link. Blackbox is the file on the craft.

Can I set this in Chrome?

Yes. Chrome or Edge uses USB or Bluetooth. Android adds Wi-Fi. iPhone uses Bluetooth or Wi-Fi and has no USB host.
