Match the pack

A battery profile is the pack the flight controller is set up for. The demo has three of them and starts on profile 1. The line under the buttons reads Editing battery profile 1.

Profile 2 is the one stored as a 6S pack: 6 cells and 8000 mAh. Profiles 1 and 3 store 0 cells. The cell-count hint says 0 means detect when the pack is plugged in, and a count of 0 is not what auto-switch matches.

Battery profile auto-switch starts off in the demo. The picture leaves a 6S pack on profile 1 until that feature is on, and then profile 2 is the one whose cell count matches.

Free. Hardware connections need Chrome or Edge on a computer; phones use the FlySpark app.

In short

The demo has three INAV battery profiles and starts on profile 1. Auto-switch starts off, so a 6S pack stays there until the feature is on. Profile 2 is the one stored with 6 cells.

Key facts

  • The demo has three battery profiles and starts on profile 1, whose line reads Editing battery profile 1.
  • Profile 1 and profile 3 store 0 cells. The cell-count hint says 0 means detect when the pack is plugged in.
  • Profile 2 stores 6 cells, 8000 mAh, a 2.80 V minimum and a 4.20 V maximum.
  • Battery profile auto-switch starts off in the demo. With it on, the footer says the flight controller picks the profile whose cell count matches the pack.
  • A cell count of 0 is not a match. INAV's notes say a miss keeps the last selected profile.
  • The profile buttons do nothing while armed. The line then reads Disarm to switch battery profiles.
  • A switch is sent only after you confirm it. Unsaved edits ask to be discarded, and discarding them never writes the board.
  • Chrome or Edge uses USB or Bluetooth. iPhone has no USB host.

Features

  • 01

    Three profiles, on 1

The demo reports three battery profiles and starts on profile 1. The line reads Editing battery profile 1.

  • 02

    Only profile 2 is 6S

Profile 2 stores 6 cells and 8000 mAh. Profiles 1 and 3 store 0 cells, which the hint calls detect when plugged in.

  • 03

    Auto-switch starts off

The feature is off in the demo. A 6S pack stays on profile 1 until you turn Battery profile auto-switch on.

  • 04

    A miss stays put

With the feature on, only a 6 cell pack matches profile 2. Any other count in the picture keeps profile 1.

  • 05

    Armed will not switch

The profile buttons do nothing while armed. The line changes to Disarm to switch battery profiles.

  • 06

    Confirm before it sends

Choosing another profile asks first. Nothing is sent until you confirm. Unsaved edits ask to be discarded.

What the demo stores

The card is titled Battery profile. The demo draws three buttons, numbered 1, 2 and 3, and the selected one is 1. Cell count on that profile is 0, from 0 to 12. The hint says 0 means detect when the pack is plugged in. Capacity on that profile starts at 1500 mAh. Minimum cell voltage starts at 3.30 V, the warning at 3.50 V, the maximum at 4.20 V, and the detect voltage at 4.25 V.

Profile 2 is seeded as the long-range pack. Its cell count is 6, its capacity is 8000 mAh, its minimum cell voltage is 2.80 V and its maximum is 4.20 V. The seed does not change that profile's warning or detect voltage, so those stay at 3.50 V and 4.25 V. Profile 3 is another copy of the starting profile, so its cell count is also 0.

The footer says each profile has its own cell count, cell voltages and capacity, plus idle, hover, cruise and failsafe throttle. With battery profile auto-switch on, it says the flight controller picks the profile whose cell count matches the pack when it is plugged in. The feature switch is on the Configuration tab, and it is off in the demo's starting set.

The picture uses those three stored counts. The pack slider starts at 6 and auto-switch starts off, so the lamp says Editing 1. Turn auto-switch on and the lamp says Profile 2, because 6 is the only stored count above 0 that matches. Move the pack off 6 and the lamp says No match. INAV's battery notes say a profile is selected automatically only when its cell count is greater than 0, and that a miss keeps the last selected profile. In the picture that last profile is 1.

Switching by hand

Tapping another profile asks first. The clean question is Switch to battery profile 2, or whichever number you tapped. Nothing is sent until you press Switch. Cancelling leaves the board on the profile it was already using.

If the Power tab has unsaved edits, the question is Discard changes. The body says switching battery profile discards the unsaved changes on this tab. Keep editing leaves you on the profile you were changing, with the edit still there. Discard and switch throws that edit away. A cell count you typed and then discarded never reaches the board, and the profile you left keeps the count it had.

While the craft is armed the buttons do nothing and the line reads Disarm to switch battery profiles. The request that changes the profile is refused while armed. Disarm, then switch.

Copy battery profile is the other action on the card. It asks for a from profile and a to profile, and it refuses the same number with Pick two different profiles. The body says the destination's cell count, cell voltages, capacity, throttle and power limits are replaced with the source's and saved. The flight controller switches profiles while copying, then goes back to the profile that was active when you started. The button is off while armed, and it is off while the tab is dirty, with the hint Save or discard the changes on this tab first.

Where you set it

Open Power on INAV. The battery profile card is the first one, and it is absent when the board has no battery profiles. Betaflight has none: its packs are saved in the app, and it detects the cell count itself. Chrome or Edge connects over USB or Bluetooth. Android adds Wi-Fi. iPhone uses Bluetooth or Wi-Fi and has no USB host.

Set a cell count above 0 on each pack you want auto-switch to recognise, then turn Battery profile auto-switch on and save. A profile left at 0 cells is the detect hint, not a pack the feature can choose. Power limits are stored with the active profile and are a different job: they cut the throttle when the draw is high. Throttle compensation is the strength field on the same tab, and it raises the throttle as the voltage falls.

FlySpark

Let a 6S pack select profile 2

  1. Open Battery profile

On INAV, open Power. The demo shows profiles 1, 2 and 3 and the line Editing battery profile 1.

  2. Read the cell counts

Profile 1 and profile 3 are 0 cells, which means detect. Profile 2 is 6 cells and 8000 mAh.

  3. Turn auto-switch on

On Configuration, turn on Battery profile auto-switch. It starts off in the demo. A count of 0 is not a match.

  4. Disarm before a manual switch

The buttons do nothing while armed. Confirm the switch. Nothing is sent until you do.

Troubleshooting

Common problems and fixes

  • Problem

The Battery profile card is missing

    Fix

The board has no battery profiles. Betaflight does not have them, so the card is not drawn there.

  • Problem

    A 6S pack stays on profile 1

    Fix

Battery profile auto-switch starts off. Turn it on. Profile 2 is the one stored with 6 cells. A profile left at 0 cells is not a match.

  • Problem

    The profile buttons do nothing

    Fix

The craft is armed. The line reads Disarm to switch battery profiles. Disarm, then choose the profile and confirm.

  • Problem

A cell count I typed disappeared

    Fix

Switching with unsaved edits asks Discard changes. Discard and switch throws the edit away, and the profile you left keeps the count it already had.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

What is an INAV battery profile?

The pack the flight controller is set up for. The footer says each one has its own cell count, cell voltages and capacity, plus idle, hover, cruise and failsafe throttle.

How many profiles does the demo have?

Three, numbered 1, 2 and 3. It starts on profile 1, and the line reads Editing battery profile 1.

What does 0 cells mean?

Detect when the pack is plugged in. Profiles 1 and 3 start there. Auto-switch matches a cell count above 0, so 0 is not a pack it can choose.

Which profile is the 6S pack?

Profile 2. It stores 6 cells, 8000 mAh, a 2.80 V minimum and a 4.20 V maximum.

Does auto-switch start on?

No. Battery profile auto-switch is off in the demo. With it on, the footer says the flight controller picks the profile whose cell count matches the pack.

What if no profile matches?

INAV's notes say the last selected profile stays. In the picture a pack that is not 6 cells keeps profile 1.

Can I switch while armed?

No. The buttons do nothing and the line reads Disarm to switch battery profiles. The request is refused while armed.

Does a switch happen as soon as I tap a number?

No. It asks first, and nothing is sent until you confirm. Unsaved edits ask Discard changes, and discarding them never writes the board.

What does copy do?

It replaces one profile's cell count, cell voltages, capacity, throttle and power limits with another's, then returns to the profile that was active. The same profile is refused.

Can I set this in Chrome?

Yes, on INAV. Chrome or Edge uses USB or Bluetooth. Android adds Wi-Fi. iPhone uses Bluetooth or Wi-Fi and has no USB host. Betaflight has no battery profiles.
