Glide, then flare

The Autoland card is the fixed-wing landing on Advanced nav. It sets how long the final is, when the glide starts, when the nose comes up for the flare, and how much tailwind is still acceptable.

The demo starts the glide at 15 m with 4 degrees of pitch, and the flare at 2 m with 8 degrees. The final is 350 m. Those are starting numbers, not a claim that every airframe lands the same way.

A plane, boat, rover or other platform shows the card. A multirotor, tricopter or helicopter hides it. If the firmware has no platform list, the card is shown. This is not Betaflight GPS Rescue, and it is not the multirotor brake.

Free. Hardware connections need Chrome or Edge on a computer; phones use the FlySpark app.

In short

The Autoland card is the fixed-wing landing on INAV Advanced nav. The demo glides from 15 m at 4 degrees and flares at 2 m at 8 degrees. A multirotor hides the card, and each safehome can carry the approach headings.

Features

  • 01

    A 350 m final

Final approach length is 1 to 1000 m, in steps of 10. The demo starts at 350 m.

  • 02

    Glide from 15 m

Start gliding at is 1 to 50 m, step 1. The demo is 15 m. Glide pitch is 0 to 45 degrees and starts at 4.

  • 03

    Flare at 2 m

Flare at is 0 to 100 m, in steps of 0.5. The demo is 2 m. Flare pitch is 0 to 45 degrees and starts at 8.

  • 04

    1.4 m/s of tailwind

Tailwind accepted up to is 0 to 30 m/s, step 0.1. The demo starts at 1.4 m/s.

  • 05

    Throttle on final

Pitch to throttle on final is 100 to 400%. The demo starts at 100%, which leaves that mix unchanged.

  • 06

    A safehome can hold it

The footer says each safehome can carry an approach: headings and altitudes for a landing into wind.

The three heights

Final approach length is how long that last leg is. The field runs from 1 to 1000 m, in steps of 10, and the demo starts at 350 m. A short final leaves less room to get lined up. A long one needs the space in front of the site.

Start gliding at is the height where the glide pitch takes over. It runs from 1 to 50 m, in steps of 1, and the demo is 15 m. Glide pitch is 0 to 45 degrees, step 1, and the demo is 4 degrees. Above that height you are still on the approach, not yet in the glide.

Flare at is lower. It runs from 0 to 100 m, in steps of 0.5 m, and the demo is 2 m. Flare pitch is 0 to 45 degrees and the demo is 8, so the nose comes up more than it did in the glide. At 0 the flare height is on the ground.

The picture on this page uses those demo heights. Drag the craft down: above 15 m it is still on the approach, from 15 m down to just above 2 m it is gliding, and at 2 m it flares. That picture does not fly the plane. INAV flies the real landing.

Wind and throttle on the way in

Tailwind accepted up to is 0 to 30 m/s, in steps of 0.1. The demo starts at 1.4 m/s. A landing into a stronger tailwind than that limit is outside what this field allows. The approach headings on a safehome are how you point the landing into wind. This number is how much tailwind is still accepted.

Pitch to throttle on final is a percent, from 100 to 400, step 1. The demo starts at 100%. It does not go below 100, so the final never uses less than the full pitch-to-throttle mix. Raising it adds throttle as the nose changes on that last leg.

The fixed-wing flight card, above this one, has its own pitch-to-throttle in microseconds per degree. Do not mix that field with this percent. One shapes cruise. This one is only the final.

Where the approach is stored

The footer says each safehome above can carry an approach: headings and altitudes for a landing into wind. A heading of 0 on that approach means the leg is unused. A negative heading is flown only in that direction, never reversed. Saving the safehome writes the approach back, because the firmware clears it when the pin is saved.

The altitudes on this card are the glide and the flare for the landing itself. The safehome approach is the path into that landing. Set both if the craft is a plane that should pick a safehome and then autoland.

The card is drawn when the platform is a plane, boat, rover or other, and the board has the final-approach length. A multirotor hides it. If the firmware sends no platform list, the card is shown rather than hidden. There is nothing to edit until that length setting exists.

Where you set it

Open Advanced nav on an INAV plane and find Autoland. Chrome or Edge connects over USB or Bluetooth. Android adds Wi-Fi. iPhone uses Bluetooth or Wi-Fi and has no USB host.

Leave the props or the prop clear of hands while you only change numbers. The first real landing is still a flight, not a slider. Start from the demo heights and change one of them at a time.

FlySpark

Set autoland

  1. Open Autoland

On an INAV plane, open Advanced nav and find Autoland. A multirotor does not show the card.

  2. Set the final

Final approach length starts at 350 m. The field is 1 to 1000 m, in steps of 10.

  3. Set glide and flare

Glide starts at 15 m and 4 degrees. Flare starts at 2 m and 8 degrees.

  4. Check the wind

Tailwind accepted up to starts at 1.4 m/s. Point the safehome approach into wind when you have one.

Troubleshooting

Common problems and fixes

  • Problem

    The Autoland card is missing

    Fix

The platform is a multirotor, tricopter or helicopter, or the board has no final-approach length. A plane shows it. No platform list also shows it.

  • Problem

The flare seems to be on the ground

    Fix

Flare at can be 0 m. The demo is 2 m. Raise it if the nose should come up while there is still height.

  • Problem

Pitch to throttle will not go below 100%

    Fix

The field starts at 100% and runs to 400%. 100% is the demo, and it is the bottom of the range.

  • Problem

    The landing is downwind

    Fix

Tailwind accepted up to starts at 1.4 m/s. The safehome approach headings are what point the landing into wind.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

What is INAV autoland?

The fixed-wing landing on Advanced nav: final length, glide height and pitch, flare height and pitch, tailwind, and throttle on final.

What are the demo heights?

Glide from 15 m at 4 degrees. Flare at 2 m at 8 degrees. The final starts at 350 m.

How long can the final be?

1 to 1000 m, in steps of 10. The demo is 350 m.

How high is the glide?

Start gliding at is 1 to 50 m, step 1. The demo is 15 m. Glide pitch is 0 to 45 degrees and starts at 4.

How high is the flare?

0 to 100 m, in steps of 0.5. The demo is 2 m. Flare pitch is 0 to 45 degrees and starts at 8.

How much tailwind is allowed?

0 to 30 m/s, in steps of 0.1. The demo starts at 1.4 m/s.

What is pitch to throttle on final?

100 to 400%. The demo is 100%, and the field cannot go below 100. It is not the cruise pitch-to-throttle on the fixed-wing card.

Does a quad have this card?

No. A multirotor, tricopter or helicopter hides it. A plane, boat, rover or other platform shows it.

How does a safehome fit in?

Each safehome can carry an approach: headings and altitudes for a landing into wind. This card is the glide and the flare of that landing.

Can I set this in Chrome?

Yes, on INAV. Chrome or Edge uses USB or Bluetooth. Android adds Wi-Fi. iPhone uses Bluetooth or Wi-Fi and has no USB host.
