IR lap timer code

The transponder tab is the IR lap timer, not the LED strip and not the video transmitter. An infrared LED on the quad sends a code so the race timer at the gate can count laps.

You pick the timing system the race uses, then this quad's code. Off sends nothing. iLap takes a 12-character hex code. ArciTimer picks ID 1 to ID 9. ERLT picks an ID from 0 to 63.

The tab is Betaflight only. INAV has no transponder tab. Saving restarts the flight controller. A firmware build without the Transponder option says so instead of showing the codes.

Free. Hardware connections need Chrome or Edge on a computer; phones use the FlySpark app.

In short

The transponder tab picks the race timer and this quad's IR code. iLap takes 12 hex characters, ArciTimer uses ID 1 to ID 9, and ERLT uses ID 0 to 63. Saving restarts the flight controller.

Key facts

  • Timing systems are Off, iLap, ArciTimer and ERLT. The tab is Betaflight only.
  • iLap takes the 12-character hex code the timer software shows. Only 0-9 and A-F.
  • ArciTimer picks ID 1 to ID 9. Each ID is an 18-character code.
  • ERLT picks an ID from 0 to 63. The tab stores it as two hex characters.
  • Off sends no code. A build without the Transponder option says so on the tab.
  • An IR LED sends the code so the race timer can count laps. Saving restarts the board.
  • This is not the LED strip and not the video transmitter.
  • Chrome or Edge uses USB or Bluetooth. iPhone has no USB host.

Send a lap code

The IR lamp sends a code only when that timer's code is complete.

Features

  • 01

    Off sends nothing

Off is the first choice. The flight controller sends no lap code, so the timer cannot see this quad.

  • 02

    iLap, 12 characters

Type the code the iLap software shows. It must be 12 hex characters, 0-9 and A-F. A shorter code stays invalid.

  • 03

    ArciTimer IDs

Pick ID 1 through ID 9. Each ID is the 18-character code that timer already knows. Switching to ArciTimer starts on ID 1.

  • 04

    ERLT, 0 to 63

Pick an ID from 0 to 63. The tab stores it as two hex characters, so ID 0 is 00 and ID 63 is 3F.

  • 05

    The board restarts

An IR LED sends this code so the race timer can count laps. The flight controller restarts after you save.

  • 06

    Missing on some builds

A firmware built without the Transponder option shows that message and no codes. Rebuild Betaflight with that option to use the IR LED.

Match the timer at the gate

The race tells you which timer is on the gate. Set the same one here. iLap, ArciTimer and ERLT do not share codes. A code that is right for one system is invisible to the others.

Off is a real choice, not an empty box. Use it when this quad should not answer a timer. The IR LED sends nothing, and the gate will not count a lap for this craft.

The code in the box is the code the timer software prints, as hex. You do not type raw bytes. For iLap, copy the 12 characters from the timer. Letters can be upper or lower case. Anything that is not 0-9 or A-F is refused, and the field will not accept more than 12 characters.

Give each quad its own code when several craft fly the same gate. Two quads on the same iLap code, the same ArciTimer ID, or the same ERLT ID look like one aircraft to the timer. The tab stores one code for this board, so a second quad needs its own ID in its own firmware.

How long each code is

iLap is 6 bytes, shown as 12 hex characters. The help under the field says to enter all 12. Until those 12 are there, the code is not saved as a valid iLap code. The demo opens on iLap with the code E00370FC0FFE, so you can see a complete code before you paste your own.

ArciTimer is 9 bytes, shown as 18 hex characters. You do not type them. The list is ID 1 through ID 9, and each row is the code that timer hands out. ID 1 is E00370FC0FFE07E0FF. Choosing ArciTimer from another system starts on ID 1.

ERLT is 1 byte, shown as two hex characters. The list is ID 0 through ID 63. ID 0 is 00, ID 10 is 0A, and ID 63 is 3F. Choosing ERLT from another system starts at 00.

Switching back to the system that was already saved puts that saved code back. Switching to a different system starts from that system's first code, not from a mix of the old bytes.

Save, restart, and a missing option

The footer on the tab says an IR LED on the quad sends this code so the race timer can count laps, and the flight controller restarts after saving. Expect the board to drop off and come back. That reboot is the save, not a failed flash.

Off is saved as the timing system alone, with no code bytes after it. iLap saves 6 bytes, ArciTimer saves 9, and ERLT saves 1. A save with the wrong length is refused, which is why the iLap field will not leave a short code in place.

Some Betaflight builds leave the transponder out. The tab then says this firmware was built without transponder support, and it tells you to rebuild Betaflight with the Transponder option to use an IR lap-timing LED. There is no code to edit until that build is on the board.

This LED is infrared, for the gate. It is not the addressable LED strip, and it is not the video transmitter channel. Colour, rainbow and Raceband live on those other pages. A dark LED strip does not mean the transponder is off, and a VTX channel does not give you a lap code.

Where you can set it

Chrome or Edge connects over USB or Bluetooth. Android adds Wi-Fi. iPhone uses Bluetooth or Wi-Fi and has no USB host. The transponder tab needs a Betaflight board. INAV does not show it.

Read the code back after the board reconnects. The timing system should still be the one you saved, and the iLap field, ArciTimer ID, or ERLT ID should match. If it came back as Off, the save did not land. Open the tab again once the board is up, rather than saving a second time while it is still rebooting.

The demo includes Off, iLap, ArciTimer and ERLT, and it starts on iLap. A real board replaces that with the code saved in its firmware. Props can stay on for this tab, because it does not spin motors. Still save only when you mean to reboot the board.

FlySpark

Set the lap code

  1. Open Transponder

Connect a Betaflight board and open Transponder. If the tab says the build has no transponder support, the codes are not there.

  2. Pick the timer

Choose Off, iLap, ArciTimer or ERLT to match the gate. Off sends no code.

  3. Enter this quad's code

iLap needs all 12 hex characters. ArciTimer is ID 1 to ID 9. ERLT is ID 0 to 63.

  4. Save and wait

Saving restarts the flight controller. The IR LED then sends that code for the race timer.

Troubleshooting

Common problems and fixes

  • Problem

The tab says the firmware has no transponder support

    Fix

This build left the option out. Rebuild Betaflight with the Transponder option. There is no code to edit until then.

  • Problem

The iLap field shows an error

    Fix

Enter all 12 hex characters from the timer, using only 0-9 and A-F. A shorter code is not valid.

  • Problem

The timer never sees this quad

    Fix

The timing system has to match the gate, and Off sends nothing. iLap, ArciTimer and ERLT do not share codes.

  • Problem

    The board rebooted after save

    Fix

That is the save. The flight controller restarts so the IR LED sends the new code.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

What is the Betaflight transponder tab?

The IR lap timer. An infrared LED sends this quad's code so the race timer can count laps. It is Betaflight only.

Which timing systems can I pick?

Off, iLap, ArciTimer and ERLT. Off sends no code. The others must match the timer on the gate.

How long is an iLap code?

12 hex characters, which is 6 bytes. The field accepts only 0-9 and A-F, and it stays invalid until all 12 are entered.

How do ArciTimer IDs work?

You pick ID 1 through ID 9. Each ID is an 18-character code. Switching to ArciTimer starts on ID 1.

How do ERLT IDs work?

You pick ID 0 through ID 63. The tab stores that as two hex characters. ID 0 is 00 and ID 63 is 3F.

Does saving restart the flight controller?

Yes. The tab says the flight controller restarts after saving, so the IR LED sends the new code.

Is this the LED strip?

No. The transponder is one infrared LED for lap timing. The LED strip page is the addressable colour strip.

Does INAV have this tab?

No. The transponder tab is Betaflight only. INAV does not show it.

What if the codes are missing?

The firmware was built without transponder support. Rebuild Betaflight with the Transponder option to use an IR lap-timing LED.

Can I set this in Chrome?

Yes. Chrome or Edge connects over USB or Bluetooth. Android adds Wi-Fi. iPhone uses Bluetooth or Wi-Fi and has no USB host.
