Betaflight PID tuning: sliders, the gain grid and angle mode

Betaflight PID tuning is the PID Tuning tab: a set of simplified sliders that rescale the whole table, and the table itself, with P, I, D max, D min and feedforward on roll, pitch and yaw. FlySpark also shows angle and horizon strength, feedforward smoothing, anti-gravity, I-term relax and the motor and idle limits that sit next to the PIDs.

This is not the chirp tool. A chirp flight is recorded in blackbox and opened on the PID autotune page, which suggests slider positions. You still save the result here, or from that tool when it writes the sliders. Filters that decide what noise the D term sees are the Filters tab. Rates are the Rates page.

In short

Betaflight PID tuning in FlySpark is the simplified sliders plus the roll, pitch and yaw gain grid. The same tab sets angle strength, horizon, feedforward and I-term relax. A chirp log is a different tool: it suggests slider moves, and this tab is where those numbers live.

Key facts

  • Simplified sliders are Off (manual), roll and pitch, or roll, pitch and yaw.
  • Each slider is a multiplier from 0 to 2.
  • The grid is P, I, D max, D min and feedforward, for roll, pitch and yaw. Feedforward goes up to 2000.
  • Angle strength, horizon strength and horizon transition are 0 to 200. Angle limit is 10 to 90 degrees.
  • Dynamic idle is editable only when DShot telemetry is on.
  • Absolute control is hidden on MSP API 1.48 and newer.
  • Acro trainer angle limit is 10 to 80 degrees.

Features

  • 01

    Simplified sliders

Shown when the firmware has the simplified-tuning block. The mode is manual, roll and pitch, or roll, pitch and yaw. Master, damping, tracking and stick response are multipliers from 0 to 2. More sliders open drift, dynamic damping and the pitch splits.

  • 02

    Gain grid

Roll, pitch and yaw each have P, I, D max and D min, plus feedforward up to 2000. With the sliders on, the grid follows them. Manual mode is the warning state: you edit the numbers yourself.

  • 03

    Angle and horizon

Angle strength, horizon strength and horizon transition are 0 to 200. Angle limit is 10 to 90 degrees. These apply when the Angle or Horizon mode is on.

  • 04

    Feedforward

    Averaging is off, 2-point, 3-point or 4-point. Transition is 0 to 1. Smoothness is 0 to 75, jitter reduction 0 to 20, boost 0 to 50, and the max-rate limit 0 to 150 percent.

  • 05

    I term

Anti-gravity gain is 0 to 25. I-term relax is off, roll and pitch, roll pitch and yaw, or the increasing variants, and its type is gyro or setpoint. The cutoff is 1 to 50 Hz. I-term rotation is a switch.

  • 06

    Idle and output

Dynamic idle is 0 to 200 and can be edited only when DShot telemetry is enabled. The hint changes when telemetry is off. Motor output limit is 1 to 100 percent. Voltage sag compensation is 0 to 150 percent.

  • 07

    Acro trainer

The angle limit is 10 to 80 degrees. It applies when the acro trainer mode is on. Absolute control, 0 to 20, is shown only when the firmware is older than MSP API 1.48.

Sliders first, the grid second

The slider mode has three positions. Manual turns the sliders off and leaves a warning that the gains are now the raw numbers. Roll and pitch lets the sliders rescale those two axes. Roll, pitch and yaw includes yaw. The footer on the card changes with that switch so you can see whether the sliders are in charge.

Master, damping, tracking and stick response each run from 0 to 2 in steps of 0.05, shown as a multiplier. More sliders adds the I gain (drift), D-max gain (dynamic damping), and separate pitch damping and pitch tracking. Moving a slider rewrites the grid. If you then type in the grid, you are fighting the slider. Switch to manual first when you want a single number.

What P, I, D and feedforward are doing

P is how hard the craft corrects a present error. Too much P and you hear a fast oscillation as soon as you fly. I holds the craft against a steady error, such as a heavy camera on one side. Too much I and the craft slowly winds up and overshoots. D damps the motion. D max and D min let D be stronger in some conditions and quieter in others, which is why the grid has both. Feedforward adds a push in the direction of the stick so the craft does not wait for an error before it moves.

Yaw usually wants less D than roll and pitch, and its feedforward is its own cell. Copying roll numbers onto yaw is a common way to make a quad feel harsh. The grid keeps them separate.

Angle mode lives partly on this tab

The mode switch is on the Modes tab. How strongly Angle holds level is angle strength, 0 to 200, here. Horizon strength and horizon transition are the same range. Angle limit, 10 to 90 degrees, is how far the craft will tilt in Angle mode. Raising the limit without raising your rates does not make the craft faster in acro. It only changes the self-level modes.

Acro trainer is the learning mode with its own limit, 10 to 80 degrees. It is a different field from the Angle limit. Turn the mode on from Modes, and set the limit here.

Feedforward, anti-gravity and I-term relax

Feedforward averaging smooths the stick over 2, 3 or 4 points, or not at all. Transition, smoothness, jitter reduction, boost and the max-rate limit shape how hard that push is and how much radio noise it copies. If the motors sound busy in a hover when your thumb is still, look here and at the filters before you drop P.

Anti-gravity raises I while the throttle is moving fast, so a punch-out does not change the craft's attitude. I-term relax lets I decay when the sticks move, so a flip does not wind I up and then snap back. The type is gyro or setpoint. The cutoff is 1 to 50 Hz. Leave these at the firmware defaults until a log shows I building during flips.

Dynamic idle, sag and the chirp tool

Dynamic idle holds a minimum RPM when DShot telemetry is on. The slider is disabled until that telemetry switch, on the motor config, is on. The hint on the disabled slider says why. It is not the same number as motor idle percent on the Motors tab.

Voltage sag compensation, 0 to 150 percent, counters the way a battery sags in a punch. Motor output limit, 1 to 100 percent, caps the command the motors receive. The chirp autotune page reads a chirp blackbox and suggests slider positions. It does not replace this tab, and it is not a live in-flight autotune.

Profiles matter. The tab has a profile bar, and a slider change writes the profile you are looking at. Rate profiles are a different set, on the Rates tab. If a tune feels right on the bench and wrong at the field, check you did not save it into a profile the radio is not selecting. Stick to one profile until the hover is quiet.

Change a feel without losing the sliders

  1. Leave the sliders on

Keep the mode on roll and pitch, or roll, pitch and yaw, unless you have a reason to edit one cell.

  2. Move one slider

Master raises or lowers the overall strength. Damping is the D side. Tracking is the P and I response. Stick response is feedforward. Stay inside a small step.

  3. Fly and log

One change, one flight. A blackbox log shows whether the gyro follows the setpoint. Hot motors mean too little filtering or too much D, which is the Filters page as well as this one.

  4. Use a chirp only as a suggestion

Open the log on the PID autotune page. Apply a suggestion only after you have read which slider it wants to move.

Troubleshooting

Common problems and fixes

  • Problem

The quad oscillates as soon as it lifts

    Fix

Lower the master or the damping slider one step. If the sliders are manual, lower P on roll and pitch. Check the Filters page before you keep adding D.

  • Problem

It feels late on a flip

    Fix

Stick response is the feedforward multiplier. Raise it slightly, or look at feedforward boost. Do not copy a number from a different rate profile without flying it.

  • Problem

    A slider move did nothing

    Fix

The slider mode is manual. Turn it back to roll and pitch, or roll, pitch and yaw, or edit the grid cell directly.

  • Problem

Motors get hot in a hover

    Fix

D is working on noise. Raise filtering or lower D, then read a blackbox. Dynamic idle and motor idle are separate and neither fixes a hot D term by itself.

Glossary

Glossary of terms

P
Present correction. Higher P reacts harder to an angle or rate error.
I
The term that holds against a constant error. Anti-gravity and I-term relax change how it behaves while the sticks move.
D
Damping. D max and D min are both on the grid so D can be stronger only when it helps.
Feedforward
Stick push that does not wait for an error. Its own column, up to 2000.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

Where is Betaflight PID tuning?

The PID Tuning tab. Simplified sliders are at the top when the firmware has them. The P, I, D and feedforward grid is under that.

What is the master slider?

A multiplier from 0 to 2 that rescales the PID table. Damping, tracking and stick response are the other main multipliers. Manual mode turns them off.

Do the sliders overwrite my numbers?

While they are on, yes. The grid follows the sliders. Switch the slider mode to manual before you type a single P, I or D.

What is feedforward?

A push in the stick direction so the craft does not wait for an error. Averaging, transition, smoothness, jitter, boost and the max-rate limit all shape it. The grid cell goes up to 2000.

Why is dynamic idle greyed out?

It needs DShot telemetry. Until that is on, the slider stays disabled and the hint says so.

Is chirp the same as this tab?

No. Chirp is a blackbox measurement on the PID autotune page. It suggests slider moves. This tab is where the gains are stored.

Where is angle strength?

On this tab: 0 to 200, with horizon strength, horizon transition and an angle limit of 10 to 90 degrees. The mode switch itself is on the Modes tab.

Does INAV use this tab?

INAV has its own PID settings on the same tab title. The simplified Betaflight sliders appear only when the firmware reports that block, which INAV does not.
