Betaflight modes: ARM, Angle, Air mode and turtle on a switch
Betaflight modes are the switches that arm the motors, turn on Angle or Horizon, hold Air mode, and start turtle mode after a crash. The Modes tab in FlySpark lists every mode the connected flight controller reports. Each card has the name from the board and a one-line explanation for that mode's permanent id, because a firmware update can rename a box without changing the id.
The tab is in the Betaflight configurator and the INAV configurator. Chrome or Edge connects over USB or Bluetooth. Android adds USB OTG and a Wi-Fi MSP bridge. iPhone uses Bluetooth or Wi-Fi and has no USB host. The receiver itself is set on the Receiver tab. A mode only does something after that link is moving the sticks.
Free. Hardware connections need Chrome or Edge on a computer; phones use the FlySpark app.

In short
Betaflight modes turn features on for a stick range: ARM, Angle, Horizon, Air mode, Prearm, turtle and GPS Rescue. FlySpark's Modes tab assigns each mode the flight controller reports to an AUX channel. The same tab sets INAV modes, including return to home and position hold.
Key facts
- The flight controller sends the mode names. FlySpark does not invent a fixed list.
- A switch range runs from 900 to 2100 µs in steps of 25.
- A range whose start equals its end is an empty slot.
- Prearm is a second switch that must be on before ARM works.
- Air mode keeps full PID control at zero throttle.
- Turtle mode (Flip over after crash) needs DShot.
- INAV adds mode logic: a slot can require another mode (AND) or stand alone (OR).

Features

Names from the board
MSP sends the box names and the permanent ids in the same order. The demo board reports ARM, ANGLE, HORIZON, ANTI GRAVITY, HEADFREE, BEEPER, BLACKBOX, FAILSAFE, AIR MODE, FLIP OVER AFTER CRASH, PREARM, VTX PIT MODE, PARALYZE and GPS RESCUE. A real board can report more.
- 02
Switch ranges
Each used slot is an AUX channel and a microsecond window. The window is 900 to 2100 µs, stepped by 25. The card shows the window as AUX and the start and end in microseconds.
- 03
Empty slots
The header counts used ranges against the total the firmware allows. A slot whose start step equals its end step is unused. Add is offered only while a free slot remains.
- 04
Configured only
A filter chip hides modes that have no range yet. Modes that already have a saved range stay at the top, so a card does not jump while you edit it.
- 05
Learn the switch
The assign sheet says to flip the switch you want, then leave it in the position that turns the mode on. You can also add a range without moving a switch and pick AUX and the microsecond window by hand.
- 06
INAV logic
On INAV the tab adds a mode-logic card and PINIO cards. A Betaflight extra range can be OR, the default, or AND, which means that slot must be on together with the mode's other slots. A slot can also follow another mode.
- 07
Live active flag
While the radio is connected, a mode that the current stick position turns on is marked ACTIVE. That is the check that the switch really covers the range you saved.
How a mode range is stored
A mode is not a setting with one value. It is a list of ranges. Each range names a permanent mode id, an AUX channel (AUX1 is channel 0) and a start and end. FlySpark draws that as a band on a 900 to 2100 µs ruler. Saving writes the ranges back with the rest of the save bar.
Two ranges on the same mode are allowed when the firmware has free slots. On Betaflight the extra data for a slot is a logic value: OR means any matching range turns the mode on, AND means this range must also be true. The default logic is OR. A linked id makes the slot follow another mode instead of a raw stick position, which is the Follows mode control.
ARM, Prearm and Paralyze
ARM arms the motors. Disarming stops them at once. Put ARM on a switch you cannot bump, usually a two-position switch at the end of its travel, and confirm the ACTIVE mark appears only in that position.
PREARM is a second switch that must be on before ARM works, so a single bump cannot spin the motors. Leave Prearm off until you are ready, then Prearm, then ARM. PARALYZE permanently disables arming until the flight controller reboots. Race marshals use it. Do not put it on a switch you might hit in the air.
Angle, Horizon, Headfree and Acro trainer
With no self-level mode on, the craft is in acro: the sticks command rotation rate. ANGLE is self-level. The sticks set an angle and the craft returns to level when the stick is centred. HORIZON is self-level near the centre and full acro flips at the stick ends. The strength of those two modes, and the angle limit, live on the PID tab, not on the mode card. The PID tuning page covers those sliders.
HEADFREE keeps stick directions relative to the pilot, whichever way the craft faces. HEADADJ sets a new forward direction for Headfree. Acro trainer, on firmware that reports it, is acro with an angle limit so you can learn rate mode without flipping over. The angle limit for that trainer is a PID setting, 10 to 80 degrees, shown when the firmware has the field.
Air mode, anti-gravity and turtle
AIR MODE keeps full PID control at zero throttle, which is what makes flips and rolls work at low throttle. Many quads leave it on for the whole flight. Betaflight also has an Air mode feature and a start-throttle on the Receiver tab: while that feature is on, Air mode stays off until throttle reaches the threshold, then stays on until you disarm. A threshold of 0 turns it on as soon as you arm. The mode switch and the feature are different controls. Set the one your firmware is actually using.
ANTI GRAVITY raises the I term during fast throttle changes so the craft holds its attitude. The help text says it is usually always on. FLIP OVER AFTER CRASH is turtle mode: it spins the motors backwards to flip the craft upright. It needs DShot and ESCs that can reverse. Motor direction and the protocol are on the Motors tab.
GPS Rescue, failsafe test and pit mode
GPS RESCUE climbs and flies back towards home. It needs a GPS fix and the rescue settings on the Failsafe tab, which the GPS and GPS Rescue page goes through. Putting the mode on a switch does not by itself set the return altitude.
The FAILSAFE mode forces a failsafe as if the receiver signal was lost. Use it on the ground, with props off, to see what the craft will do. It is not the switch you fly with. VTX PIT MODE puts the video transmitter in low-power pit mode. The power table and pit behaviour are on the Video TX page.
INAV modes on the same tab
INAV uses the same range editor and a different set of permanent ids. The demo reports ARM, ANGLE, HORIZON, NAV ALTHOLD, HEADING HOLD, HEADFREE, HEADADJ, NAV RTH, NAV POSHOLD, MANUAL, BEEPER, OSD OFF, AUTO TUNE, FAILSAFE, NAV WP, AIR MODE, NAV LAUNCH and TURTLE. A board with two mixer profiles also reports MIXER PROFILE 2 and MIXER TRANSITION.
NAV RTH climbs to the return altitude, flies home and lands or loiters. NAV POSHOLD holds position with GPS, and loiters on a fixed wing. NAV WP flies the waypoint mission. NAV LAUNCH is the hand or bungee launch: you arm, throw, and the motor starts once the throw is detected. Those navigation numbers are on the INAV Navigation and Mission tabs, not on the mode card. The INAV configurator is where those pages live.

Put ARM and Angle on switches
Connect and open Modes
Connect the flight controller in FlySpark and open the Modes tab. Move the sticks and watch for ACTIVE so you know the receiver is live.
Assign ARM
Open ARM, flip the arm switch, and leave it in the position that should arm. Save. Confirm ACTIVE appears only there, with the props off.
Add Prearm if you want a second lock
Assign PREARM to another switch. ARM must not work while Prearm is off.
Assign Angle
Put ANGLE on a three-position switch if you also want Horizon or acro on the other positions. Leave the ranges with a gap so two modes are not on at once unless you mean them to be.
Troubleshooting
Common problems and fixes
Problem
The switch does nothing
Fix
Open the Receiver tab and confirm the AUX channel moves when you flip that switch. Then check the mode range covers the microsecond value the channel actually reaches.
Problem
ARM never goes ACTIVE
Fix
Look at the Setup tab arming flags. A missing sensor calibration, a throttle that is not low, or Prearm being off will block arming even when the mode range is correct.
Problem
Two modes come on together
Fix
Their ranges overlap on the same AUX position. Separate the windows, or use a different channel.
Problem
Add is missing
Fix
Every range slot is used. Remove a mode you do not fly, or the header count will stay at the firmware limit.
Glossary
Glossary of terms
- AUX
- A radio channel after the four sticks. AUX1 is the first of them, stored as channel 0.
- Permanent id
- The mode number that does not change when the firmware renames the box. FlySpark's one-line help is keyed by this id.
- Air mode
- PID control stays active at zero throttle so the craft can still rotate.
- Prearm
- A second switch that must be on before ARM is allowed.
FAQ
Frequently asked questions
Where are Betaflight modes set?
On the Modes tab. Each mode the firmware reports gets a card. You attach it to an AUX channel and a microsecond range, then save.
Why is Angle missing?
The list comes from the board. If a mode is not in the firmware build, it is not shown. The Configured only filter also hides modes you have not assigned yet. Turn that filter off.
What is the difference between Angle and Horizon?
Angle self-levels across the stick. Horizon self-levels near the centre and allows full acro at the stick ends. Acro, with neither mode on, commands rotation rate.
Does Air mode have to be on a switch?
The AIR MODE box can be on a switch. Betaflight can also turn Air mode on from the Receiver tab after the throttle passes a threshold. A threshold of 0 means it starts when you arm. Use the control your build is actually running.
What is turtle mode?
FLIP OVER AFTER CRASH spins the motors backwards to right the craft. It needs DShot and ESCs that reverse. Take the props off the first time you try it.
What does Prearm do?
It is a second switch that must be on before ARM works. It is there to stop an accidental arm.
Can I test failsafe from this tab?
Yes, on the ground with props off. The FAILSAFE mode forces a signal-loss failsafe. Do not leave it on a switch you use in the air.
Do INAV modes use the same tab?
Yes. INAV adds return to home, position hold, waypoint mission, launch and, when the board has two mixer profiles, mixer profile 2 and mixer transition. It also shows mode logic and PINIO.
