INAV mixer: platform type, frame presets, motor and servo rules

The INAV mixer is where the flight controller learns the shape of the aircraft: which platform it is, where the motors sit, and which servos move the surfaces. FlySpark's Mixer tab reads those rules from the connected board and edits the current mixer profile. The cards are Mixer profile, Platform, Frame, Motor mixer and Servo mixer. A board with a single profile hides the profile card.

Open it from the INAV configurator. Chrome or Edge connects over USB or Bluetooth. The Android and iPhone apps add Wi-Fi. An iPhone has no USB host, so it never sees a flight controller over a cable. The in-flight switch for the second profile is MIXER PROFILE 2 on the Modes tab. Motor order and spin direction on this tab stay disabled until the mixer rules are saved.

Free. Hardware connections need Chrome or Edge on a computer; phones use the FlySpark app.

In short

The INAV mixer sets platform type, frame presets, and the motor and servo rules for the current profile. FlySpark shows two mixer profiles when the board has them, so a VTOL can keep hover and forward flight apart. A preset fills the rules; Save reboots the flight controller.

Key facts

  • The Mixer tab is INAV only. It is platform, frame, motor mixer and servo mixer.
  • Frame chips use the preset names in FlySpark, from Quad X and Quad + through Airplane, Boat and Rover.
  • A preset replaces every motor and servo rule and sets the platform. Nothing is written until Save.
  • Each motor rule is throttle, roll, pitch and yaw. Throttle runs from 0 to 1. Roll, pitch and yaw run from −2 to 2.
  • A servo rule is a servo, an input, a rate from −125 to 125 percent, and a speed from 0 to 255.
  • Two mixer profiles appear when the board reports them. Switching saves and reboots, and is blocked while armed.
  • MIXER PROFILE 2, set on the Modes tab, selects profile 2 in flight. Profile 1 flies when that switch is off.

Features

  • 01

    Platform type

Platform type is a choice of the names the board reports. On the INAV demo those names are Multirotor, Airplane, Helicopter, Tricopter, Rover and Boat. The platform decides how INAV flies and navigates. Mixer changes apply after Save reboots the flight controller.

  • 02

Props out, flaps and profile link

Props out (reversed motor direction) makes every motor spin the other way and flips yaw to match. Has flaps enables the FLAPERON mode and input. Link mixer profile to control profile is shown for the setting name the board answers: mixer_pid_profile_linking on INAV 7, mixer_control_profile_linking on INAV 8. Both use that same label. The INAV 7 row adds the hint that switching mixer profile also switches to the control profile with the same number.

  • 03

    Two profiles for VTOL

When the board reports two profiles, Profile 1 and Profile 2 sit on a segmented control. Each profile has its own platform, motor rules and servo rules. A VTOL uses one for hover and one for forward flight. The other profile's used motor count and servo rule count are shown under the control. Disarm to switch. The switch saves settings and reboots.

  • 04

    Frame presets from the code

The Frame card lists Quad X, Quad +, Hex X, Hex +, Tricopter, Flying wing, Airplane, Y6, Y4, Octo X8, Octo Flat +, Octo Flat X, V-tail Quad, Hex H, A-tail Quad, Flying wing, differential thrust, Airplane, differential thrust, Airplane V-tail, Airplane V-tail, differential thrust, Airplane V-tail, single aileron servo, Airplane without rudder, Boat and Rover. The header shows the matching name, or Custom mix when the rules match none of them.

  • 05

    Motor mixer

Each used motor is a row: Throttle, Roll, Pitch and Yaw, shown to two decimal places. Open a row to edit. Throttle is usually 1 and runs from 0 to 1. Roll, pitch and yaw run from −2 to 2 in steps of 0.05, with three decimal places. Negative roll is the right side. Negative pitch is the front. Negative yaw spins clockwise (props in). Add motor starts at throttle 1 and zeroes for roll, pitch and yaw.

  • 06

    Servo mixer

Each rule adds input times rate to a servo. The row title is Servo 1 through Servo 16. The editor sets servo, input, rate and speed. Rate runs from −125 to 125 percent, and a negative rate reverses that input for this servo only. Speed 0 is instant; otherwise the servo may move at that many times 10 microseconds per second, up to 255. Endpoints, centre and reversing are on the Servos tab, not here.

  • 07

    Order and spin direction

When the motor rules are already saved and you are not previewing another frame, Motor order and Spin direction open. Motor order is the INAV reorder screen. Spin direction is the motor direction wizard. If the draft is still dirty, both buttons stay off and the line under them says to save the mixer changes first.

  • 08

    Automatic VTOL switch

Automatic switch on RTH is on the profile card. During RTH a multirotor profile switches to airplane to fly home, and an airplane profile switches back to land. Transition time is how long the MIXER TRANSITION mode runs before that automatic switch. It is shown in seconds with one decimal place. Tailsitter orientation pitches the sensor alignment 90 degrees for flying as a tailsitter in this profile.

Platform type and the switches next to it

The Platform card is the first place the aircraft type is set by hand. Platform type lists the lookup the flight controller sent. FlySpark prints those names with spaces and capitals, so MULTIROTOR appears as Multirotor. Choosing a frame preset writes the preset's platform into this same field: Multirotor, Tricopter, Airplane, Rover or Boat. Helicopter is on the demo's list and has no frame chip.

Props out (reversed motor direction) is a single toggle. The hint says every motor spins the other way and yaw is flipped to match. The frame diagram uses that flag, so the preview spins the other way while the toggle is on. Has flaps turns on the FLAPERON mode and the flaperon mixer input. Assign that mode on the Modes tab after the toggle is saved.

The link toggle follows the firmware's setting name. INAV 7 answers mixer_pid_profile_linking. INAV 8 answers mixer_control_profile_linking. A missing setting is not drawn, so a board shows one of those rows, not both. The visible label on each is Link mixer profile to control profile. Only the INAV 7 row carries the hint about switching to the control profile with the same number. The PID tuning page is where the control profile's gains live; this toggle only ties the profile numbers together.

Two mixer profiles

INAV 7 and later can keep two mixer profiles. FlySpark shows the Mixer profile card only when the board reports at least two. The selected segment is the profile in use. Choosing the other one asks for confirmation. If the draft has unsaved mixer changes, the dialog says those changes will be discarded. It also says the flight controller saves its settings and reboots to set up the outputs for this profile. Confirm with Switch & reboot, or cancel. While the board is armed the segments are disabled and the line reads Disarm to switch mixer profiles.

Under the segments, the card says which profile you are editing and how many used motors and servo rules the other profile holds. A motor counts when its throttle is not zero. A servo rule counts when its rate is not zero. If MIXER PROFILE 2 is already on a switch, the card says switch off flies profile 1 and switch on flies profile 2. If it is not, the card says to put MIXER PROFILE 2 on a switch in the Modes tab.

Automatic switch on RTH, Transition time and Tailsitter orientation sit on this card, so they belong to the profile you are editing. Transition time uses a scale of 0.1 and one decimal place, with the unit seconds. The minimum and maximum come from the board's setting, not from a fixed box in the tab. Tailsitter orientation is a toggle for that profile only.

Frame preset names

The Frame card header is the preset whose motor rules and servo rules match the current mix, or Custom mix. Tapping a chip only previews it. The diagram and the line Preview of that name stay on screen, and the rules below do not change until you press Use and confirm. Use is disabled when that preset is already set, and the button then reads that the name is set. Confirming replaces every motor and servo mixer rule and sets the platform. The dialog names the platform with the same pretty label as the Platform type menu. Nothing is written until Save. If the preset includes servos, the dialog adds a line to check that every control surface moves the right way before flying.

Multirotor chips are Quad X, Quad +, Hex X, Hex +, Y6, Y4, Octo X8, Octo Flat +, Octo Flat X, V-tail Quad, Hex H and A-tail Quad. Tricopter is its own platform. It has three motors with yaw left at zero and one servo rule: Servo 5, stabilised yaw, rate 100. Airplane chips are Flying wing, Airplane, Flying wing, differential thrust, Airplane, differential thrust, Airplane V-tail, Airplane V-tail, differential thrust, Airplane V-tail, single aileron servo, and Airplane without rudder. Boat and Rover are separate chips. Rover and Boat share the same motor and servo rules, one motor and Servo 4 on stabilised yaw at 100 percent, so the platform name is what tells them apart.

Flying wing puts stabilised roll and stabilised pitch on Servo 2 at 50 percent, and on Servo 3 at −50 percent roll and 50 percent pitch. Airplane puts stabilised pitch on Servo 2, stabilised roll on Servo 3 and Servo 4, and stabilised yaw on Servo 5, each at 100 percent. Differential-thrust airplane and wing presets add a second motor with the opposite yaw sign. The V-tail presets mix pitch and yaw onto the tail servos at 50 and −50 percent. After a preset is applied you can still edit any row, and the header becomes Custom mix as soon as the rules no longer match a chip.

Motor rules

The Motor mixer footer says each motor's share of throttle, roll, pitch and yaw. Roll and pitch place the motor on the frame. The sign of yaw sets which way it should spin. An empty list says No motors. Pick a frame above or add one. Add motor is available until every slot the board reported is used. The new rule is throttle 1, roll 0, pitch 0, yaw 0, which is a used motor that does not yet command roll, pitch or yaw.

Servo rules

The Servo mixer footer says each rule adds input times rate to a servo, and that endpoints, centre and reversing are on the Servos tab. If the board reports no servo mixer, the card says so and offers no rows. If it does, and no rule is used, the card says No servo rules. Multirotors don't need any. When any rule is used, a warning says to check on the bench that every control surface moves the right way for roll, pitch and yaw.

Save, reboot, and the two wizards

Applying a preset or editing a number only changes the draft. The Platform card says mixer changes apply after Save reboots the flight controller. Until that save, Motor order and Spin direction stay disabled, with the note Save your mixer changes first. After a clean save, Motor order opens the INAV motor reorder screen and Spin direction opens the motor direction wizard. Both work on the rules stored on the board, so a preview or an unsaved edit is not what they rearrange.

Switching mixer profile is a different write. It discards the draft, asks the board to select the profile, and reboots. The snackbar then names the profile that is in use. Props stay off for that reboot, the same as for any mixer save. The INAV configurator page covers connecting and the rest of the INAV tabs around this one.

Load a frame and a second VTOL profile

  1. Open the Mixer tab

Connect the INAV board in FlySpark and open Mixer. If the board has never had defaults chosen, finish that on the Setup tab first so the platform is not still the empty start.

  2. Preview a frame, then use it

On Frame, tap the chip that matches the aircraft, such as Quad X or Airplane. Read the preview, press Use, and confirm. The dialog names the platform it will set. Servo frames also tell you to check surface direction before flying.

  3. Check motor and servo rows

Open each motor and confirm throttle, roll, pitch and yaw. Open each servo rule and confirm the servo number, input and rate sign. Negative rate reverses that input on that servo only.

  4. Save, then run the wizards

Save and let the board reboot. Motor order and Spin direction turn on only after that save. Props off for both wizards.

  5. Set profile 2 for a VTOL

If Profile 2 is shown, disarm, switch to it, and let the board reboot. Load the other frame the same way and save. On Modes, put MIXER PROFILE 2 on a switch. Switch off flies profile 1. Switch on flies profile 2.

Troubleshooting

Common problems and fixes

  • Problem

    The profile segments do nothing

    Fix

The craft is armed, or a switch is already in progress. Disarm. The line under the segments says Disarm to switch mixer profiles. The card itself is hidden when the board reports fewer than two profiles.

  • Problem

    Switching profile threw away edits

    Fix

The confirm dialog says unsaved mixer changes will be discarded. Save first if those edits should stay, then switch. The switch still reboots.

  • Problem

A surface moves the wrong way

    Fix

Open that servo rule and set a negative rate. That reverses this input for this servo only. Endpoints and the servo's own reverse live on the Servos tab. The warning on the card asks for a bench check before flying.

  • Problem

Add motor or Add rule is disabled

    Fix

Every slot the board reported is already used. Remove a motor or a rule you do not need. Removing packs the used rules to the front.

  • Problem

The servo card says this flight controller reports no servo mixer

    Fix

The board sent an empty servo-mixer list. There is no Add rule in that case. Motor rules can still be edited.

  • Problem

Yaw is backwards after Props out

    Fix

Props out flips yaw to match the reversed spin. Save and reboot so the platform card's change is the one the board is flying. Then confirm the frame diagram and a props-off spin check.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

Where is the INAV mixer in FlySpark?

On the Mixer tab of the INAV configurator. The cards are Mixer profile (when the board has two), Platform, Frame, Motor mixer and Servo mixer.

Which frame presets are on the tab?

Quad X, Quad +, Hex X, Hex +, Tricopter, Flying wing, Airplane, Y6, Y4, Octo X8, Octo Flat +, Octo Flat X, V-tail Quad, Hex H, A-tail Quad, Flying wing with differential thrust, Airplane with differential thrust, the three Airplane V-tail chips, Airplane without rudder, Boat and Rover. The chip labels use a comma before differential thrust and before single aileron servo.

Does Use write the preset immediately?

No. Use replaces the draft of every motor and servo rule and sets the platform. Nothing is written until Save, and that save reboots the flight controller.

Why does the header say Custom mix?

The current motor rules and servo rules do not match a preset. Rover and Boat match each other, so the platform name is what separates them. Any hand edit that leaves the preset's numbers also shows Custom mix.

How do the two VTOL profiles switch in flight?

Put MIXER PROFILE 2 on a switch in Modes. Switch off flies profile 1 and switch on flies profile 2. Changing the profile from the Mixer tab itself disarms, saves and reboots, so that control is for the bench.

What does Automatic switch on RTH do?

During RTH a multirotor profile switches to airplane to fly home, and an airplane profile switches back to land. Transition time is how long MIXER TRANSITION runs before that switch, shown in seconds with one decimal.

Why are Motor order and Spin direction grey?

They run on the rules saved on the board. Save the mixer first. They also hide while you are only previewing a frame you have not used yet.

Can a multirotor leave the servo list empty?

Yes. With no used servo rules the card says multirotors do not need any. Tricopter is the exception among the multirotor-like chips: its preset includes a yaw servo.

Where are servo endpoints?

On the Servos tab. The mixer rule only chooses the servo, the input, the rate and the speed. A negative rate reverses that one input.

Why is there only one Link mixer profile row?

INAV 7 calls it mixer_pid_profile_linking and INAV 8 calls it mixer_control_profile_linking. The board answers for its own name, and the tab hides a setting it did not receive. Both labels read Link mixer profile to control profile.
